In His Own Words
i started making music very early. i got involved with some rock bands in school, but didn't meet the right people to play with and instead bought a drumcomputer in 1979. this was the main reason i began doing electronic music.
soon the guitar was replaced by some synths. later i bought my first sampler and i made millions of tracks then. i recorded everything on a fostex 4 track cassette tape machine. this was in the early eighties. i was a great fan of everything that came out of manchester: joy division, the smiths, the fall. later i became fascinated by gothic wave shit like the sisters of mercy (they even played live with a drum machine that really impressed me), the cure, virgin prunes a. o.
the tracks i did at that time all had vocals on them and still had bits of guitar stuff, although i made nearly everything with step sequencers and rhythm boxes. in 1988 i went to london for a week and attended my first acid house party. that experience completely changed my view of music. until then, i really hated so-called disco and dance music, but after returning from london i figured out how to use my old TB 303. that was the end of writing lyrics and song structures. everything had gone acid. in 1989 i recorded my first 12" for vienna's famous indie label gig records which was also the home of artists like falco. this record was again very new order / pet shop boys influenced and a complete flop, but it was not the only thing i did for gig records.
in 1992 i met patrick pulsinger who just returned from NYC. he wanted to create a new label and played me some tracks he did while in new york. those tracks changed my view of music for the 2nd time, and cheap records was born. i have worked with pulsinger and tunakan since then. we founded "io," our "techno band," and did four 12"es on cheap. i also worked on my solo projects (gerard de luxxe) and started doing "maeuse," my return to the rock world, together with singer and cartoonist tex rubinowitz. suddenly everything in vienna changed. in the middle of the 90's there were a lot of new labels around, which i really liked. i did records for nearly every label in vienna cheap, morbid, mego, sabotage, uptight, pomelo, abuse industries and again gig records. i also released a 12" on hollis haus from NYC my first non-viennese label appearance.
in 1997 i got in touch with hans platzgumer who formerly played in the indie band HP zinker. with him i started working in munich on different projects like fingerfood and now cube and sphere. our first CD was released in february this year on disko b from germany.
i just finished "concorde," my first full length album for cheap records.
i did 2 12"es on breakin records from england, and a CD on breakin will come out later this year. i did one track for the ersatz audio compilation "oralolio."
i produced a 7" with germany's art-riot-girl-gang chicks on speed and here
i am now on interdimensional transmissions, which was always one of my top 5 record labels.
In His Own Words, II
1988 first release on austrias GIG records under the (very bad) name of "hype". it was hommage to new order and pet shop boys. and it was a mega flop. GIG records (home of FALCO by the way) never release another "hype" record.
1993 i met PATRICK PULSINGER. he just founded his record label "CHEAP RECORDS" together with ERDEM TUNAKAN. soon a new group was born and under the name of IO we released 4 12" eps. besides IO i started releasing straight egde, detroit influenced minimal techno stuff under the name POTUZNIK on cheap records in the following years i released many different kinds of electronic music on many different labels here in vienna (MEGO, SABOTAGE, POMELO, UPTIGHT, MORBID etc..) and also some stuff on DISKO B.
1994 was the year when another project called "MAEUSE" was formed toghether with actor and cartoonist TEX RUBINOWITZ. we tried to bring back "rock n roll" into electronic music and did 3 albums which now everybody would maybe call "electroclash".. we ve been there before ;-)
i met HANS PLATZGUMER in the middle of the 90ies and we decided also to do some projects together. this was the birth of my "experimental drum&bass-project" CUBE & SPHERE. we released an album and many 12" eps on DISKO B.
through platzgumer i also got in touch with CHICKS ON SPEED soon after they invented themselfs.. i really liked their attidude, the mixture between techno and punk and joined them for a lot of tracks that i produced for them, some of them togther with MEGO founder RAMON BAUER.
chicks on speed introduced me to ED DMX aka DMX KREW. i was an avid fan of him and his label BREAKIN' records and i had those very 80ies influenced tracks ready that didnt fit on any techno label. i played those tracks to ed and GD LUXXE was born. i released and album (SUBMISSION) and two 12" eps on breakin..
soon after that i got in touch with detroits INTERDIMENSIONAL TRANSMISSIONS label whos founder BMG already released a track by pulsinger & tunakan on his label. he also liked what i did and soon after the 12" vinyl "THE 20TH DOOR" was released. a full length album called "THE 21ST DOOR" will be released in january 2003. expect some crazy locked-groove-vinyl-madness and a solid CD including the tracks from "the 20th door" and many new tracks
at about the same time i started doing tracks for detroits ERSATZ AUDIO. my first full length album on ersatz will be out in spring 2003.
about a year ago i started collaborating with SUCTION RECORDS" from canada. i did a track label-founder JASON AMM which appeared on a suction compilation called SNOW ROBOTS. soon after we agreed to release a GD LUXXE mini album (VENDETTA) on suction which saw the light of day in september 2002.
recently i worked as a producer for acts like ELECTRONICAT, TED MINSKY and austrian electropop duo SKIZZE.
in autumn 2002 i did some remixes of TIGERBEAT 6 artists like CEX and NUMBERS.
another 90ties project with PATRICK PULSINGER, called CHURCH OF CARBON, is reanimated to release brand new tracks later in 2003 on san franciscos TIGERBEAT 6 label.
i'm also managing my own record label ANGELIKA KOEHLERMAN which was founded together with tex rubonowitz after we decided to split up maeuse.. we released 15 CD albums so far. some cooperations with tigerbeat 6 are planned for 2003. see more details at http://angelika.koehlermann.at
