I.T. Radio: Eris Drew

The Hugo Ball cofounder and smartbar resident shares her vibrant take on dancefloor sounds with BMG and Erika, live from our Detroit studio.

Doo-wop, noise music, jug bands: this is not a typical list of influences for an artist working in the often all-synthesized world of dance music. But they infuse the ever-expanding sound world of Chicago-based DJ, songwriter, vocalist, keyboardist, smartbar resident and Hugo Ball cofounder Eris Drew. She’s less concerned with genre than the universal rituals and energies underpinning the dancefloor. She calls it the “mother beat,” and some two decades into her career, Drew continues to delve deeper into the vibe as a DJ, live performer and dance music impresario. Her project quite naturally got her onto the radar of fellow travelers at Interdimensional Transmissions – she’s played for the crew in Detroit, and BMG has called her one of his absolute favorites of the moment. Now, Drew will join BMG and Erika live from our Motor City studio for an exegesis on all things Mother Beat. Plus, hear Erika explore the housier side of her sound in a snippet of a recent set for Detroit-based underground queer party Macho City.
