I.T. Radio: Portage Garage Sounds
The Michigan label’s founders tell the story of the collective through the deep Detroit cuts that inspired it.
Portage Garage Sounds is the brainchild of brothers Ben and Zachary Saginaw, two Michigan natives with an enduring love for the weirder corners of Detroit music. When they founded the Hamtramck-based label in 2017, they’d already been fixtures on the scene for years — Ben as the bassist for rock band Ritual Howls, and Zachary as the mastermind behind genre-agnostic electronic project Shigeto (he’s also a Red Bull radio host). According to BMG, “When people ask me what is new and fresh in Detroit, I say Portage Garage Sounds, situated somewhere between the IT Acid Series and the most leftfield records of Sound Signature.” This week, Ben and Zachary join Interdimensional Transmissions for a discussion of the records that inspired them to create the label, along with Chambray founder Vinnie Massimino, who also manages daily operations for Portage Garage Sounds. The show opens with a 30-minute live mix from Erika.
